| Professional Development ·> LTL Summer Institute 2006 LTL Summer Institute 2006 Presenters’ Bios - Summer Institute 2006 Workshops Workshop 1: Resources that Rip – for Literacy (elementary/secondary) Cathy Costello is a Curriculum Coordinator supporting literacy for students at risk in York Region District School Board. An educator for 30 years, she is the co-author of two textbooks – Reading and Writing for Success and Reading and Writing for Success Senior. Cathy has participated on provincial writing teams for literacy resources including Think Literacy Cross-Curricular Approaches and the Reaching Higher resource package. Cathy is a BOLDPRINT author, and a popular keynote and conference presenter. Workshop 2: Classroom Dynamics for Literacy Learning (secondary) Scott Fielder is an author, consultant, and a science instructor at Humber College and York University. A chemist by vocation, he also teaches science for non-science majors. Scott once taught an "Upward Bound" course to young criminal offenders and engaged them by volunteering to teach them how to make an atomic bomb. (Problem was they could never get the plutonium.) Always engaging and inspiring, Scott is a well-known conference presenter and keynote speaker who manages to wow audiences everywhere. Scott is a BOLDPRINT author. Workshop 3: Talking, Reading, and Writing Our Way into Literacy: In Graphic Detail (elementary/secondary) Kathy Gold Lundy, the Course Director of the Fine Arts program at York University, Faculty of Education, is on secondment from the Toronto District School Board, where she is District-wide Coordinator of Dramatic Arts and Dance. While Kathy was at the board, she taught teachers how to use drama and dance as teaching methodologies within an inclusive curriculum. Kathy has coordinated the writing of a number of curriculum documents including The Treasure Chest: Story, Drama and Dance/Movement in the Classroom, a curriculum resource for elementary teachers; and Curriculum in Motion, a videotape package made in partnership with the Danny Grossman Dance Company. Kathy is a BOLDPRINT and TIMELINE author, and the author of What Do I Do About the Kid Who…? Fifty Ways to Turn Teaching into Learning. She is a popular conference presenter and keynote speaker across Canada, the US, and overseas. Workshop 4: Making the Math Connection: Inquiries and Investigations Across the Curriculum (elementary) Cathy Marks-Krpan is a lecturer at the Ontario Institute for Students in Education, University of Toronto. She has taught at all elementary levels and has worked as a board consultant for grades K-8. Cathy has presented internationally to parents, teachers, and administrators on effective teaching and learning strategies across the curriculum. She is particularly interested in helping children reflect on their thinking and share their insights through speaking, writing, and images. Cathy is a BOLDPRINT author and the author of The Write Math, My Math Journal, and Math Readers. Workshop 5: Text This Message: Technology as a Tool for Literacy (secondary) Pina Sacco is a Program Resource Teacher for Literacy in grades 7-12 with the York Catholic District School Board and the former Head of the Canadian and World Studies Department at St. Augustine CHS, an e-learning school. Dana Sheahan is a Vice Principal and former Department Head of English at St.Augustine CHS, an e-learning school. Shawna Young is the Computers in Education (Secondary) Consultant with the York Catholic District School Board and a former history teacher at St. Augustine CHS. Workshop 6: Communicating With Music: Strategies Promoting Literacy Growth (elementary/secondary)
Robert Cutting has been an educator for over 30 years, and is currently a Program Consultant for the Durham Catholic District School Board. He has been an author of educational books since 1973. Through Robert's interest in his Kanien k' haka (Mohawk) ancestry, he weaves storytelling into many of his presentations to give a unique perspective on everyday life. Robert is an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher and presenter, and a BOLDPRINT and TIMELINE author. Workshop 7: Write This! A Key to Literacy (elementary) Kirsten Nowak has been a classroom teacher for many years working with children with learning difficulties as a Learning Assistance and Reading Recovery Teacher. She is presently a Faculty Associate at Simon Fraser University and teaches courses in Children’s Literature. Kirsten is also a reading consultant.
Workshop 8: Measuring Up: Using Assessment Data for Effective Teaching (elementary/secondary) Theresa Meikle is a Literacy / Student Success Curriculum Consultant for Grades 7 to 12 in the York Region District School Board who frequently leads workshops on building reading comprehension through arts approaches, e.g., drama and media. Theresa’s extensive background as a classroom teacher, particularly with struggling students, and her participation in regional and provincial professional development opportunities have provided her with valuable insight into identifying students’ instructional needs and using appropriate strategies to move students forward in their literacy development. As well, her background as a drama teacher has provided her with a clear understanding of the teacher’s role as a learning coach working alongside students.
